    Challenge

    Finding the Right Lead Hook

Verblio approached us with plans to design and market an ebook focused on the value of content briefs. Their goal was simple: lead generation. To help them accomplish this goal, we started by asking, “Is an ebook the right lead hook for your audience?”

From our past experience, ebooks often struggled to perform as effective lead drivers. Rather than moving forward with an assumption about what their audience wanted, we saw an opportunity to test multiple premium content formats to determine what would actually resonate with their audience.

This initiative was about more than a single campaign. In just two weeks we generated 84 qualified leads, but the real value was in uncovering a scalable, data-driven framework for growth. CleverFunnel helped us move beyond assumptions and align our marketing with what the market actually responds to.”

To move beyond guesswork, we built a content testing framework designed to discover which pain points sparked the strongest engagement, and which lead hooks would best convert around those pain points.

Instead of putting all our effort into a single ebook, we created multiple lead hooks that were sharper, more targeted, and easier to use. Each was designed to be:

      • Specific: Focused on a particular platform or problem
      • Timely: Tied to 2025 algorithm changes and market shifts
      • Actionable: Giving marketers immediate tools they could put to work

This approach zeroed in on Verblio’s core audience: content marketing directors at growth-stage companies facing a familiar challenge: “We’re creating content, but it’s not ranking.”

      Testing Framework

We developed six distinct lead hooks, each addressing different pain points.

Pain Point 1: Scaling Your Team

      "Everyone's creating content—but it's messy, off-brand, and inconsistent."

      • Lead Hook A: A step-by-step guide for creating repeatable content briefs that align teams, scale processes, and keep every piece on-brand
      • Lead Hook B: 10 ready-to-use content brief templates that simplify managing multiple writers while keeping content on-brand
      Pain Point 2: Content ROI
"We're creating content non-stop, but it's not driving results—and I'm the one who has to explain why."

      • Lead Hook A: A step-by-step editable calendar for planning 90 days of consistent, high-performing content
      • Lead Hook B: A simple, ready-to-use reporting dashboard that connects content directly to pipeline and demonstrates measurable ROI
Pain Point 3: Fresh Content Ideas
"I'm tired of guessing what to post—nothing feels new or interesting anymore."

      • Lead Hook A: A curated list of proven subject lines and CTAs to make content stand out in 2025
      • Lead Hook B: A step-by-step AI prompt that generates fresh lead magnet ideas in minutes and drives sign-ups

We kept it simple by giving each pain point just two variations to test against each other. This way, we could clearly see which combination of pain point and content format actually moved the needle, without muddying the waters with too many different options.

      Campaign Execution
Phase 1: Thought Leadership Ads & Multi-Variant Landing Pages

To kick off the campaign, we launched LinkedIn thought leadership ads designed to address broad pain points from the user’s perspective while hinting at a solution without giving everything away. These ads drove traffic to gated content hosted on multi-variant landing pages, allowing us to test different messaging and formats to identify the combinations that resonated most.

We approached this strategy with the current market realities in mind: lead generation is harder than ever, thanks to algorithm changes, AI-driven content saturation, and audiences tuning out traditional ads. Yet, conversions are still possible if marketers adjust their approach. Key insights guided our strategy:

      • People engage more with content from trusted individuals (thought leaders) than from brands.
      • Sharing from personal LinkedIn profiles is now essential.
      • Prospects are hesitant to provide email addresses, so the perceived value of gated content must be undeniable.

By pairing thought leadership ads with high-value gated content and multi-variant landing pages, we were able to optimize for meaningful engagement and conversions across the funnel.

      Phase 2: Email Nurture Sequence

After prospects downloaded any piece of gated content, they entered a unified email drip workflow designed to educate, provide ongoing value, and guide them toward signing up with Verblio.

Rather than tailoring the sequence to each individual content piece, we applied the same workflow to all leads to maximize efficiency and reinforce Verblio’s thought leadership across the board.

This approach also allowed the team to continue using the sequence as a reusable asset, providing ongoing insights and a foundation for future campaigns.

      The sequence included:

      • Email 1: Delivery of all content pieces packaged into one comprehensive toolkit
      • Email 2: Additional value-add tools, including “7 SEO Strategies for AI Search Optimization”
      • Email 3: Quick tip highlighting one key piece from the toolkit
      • Email 4: Soft CTA encouraging recipients to book a Managed Services consultation

This structure educated leads, reinforced the value of Verblio’s offerings, and gradually nudged prospects toward conversion—creating a scalable system that supports both immediate results and longer-term lead nurturing.

More than Answers—Uncovering a Repeatable Engine for Growth

After testing with a modest $1,800 budget over 10 days, we quickly identified two clear winning lead generation hooks:

      • Pain Point 1 (Scaling Your Team): Resonated strongly with content teams struggling to grow without chaos.
      • Pain Point 2 (Content ROI): Appealed to decision-makers needing proof that their content drives revenue.

      The top-performing assets were:

      • Content-ROI Calculator
      • Content Calendar
      • Content Brief eBook

Interestingly, our initial hypothesis that the ebook might underperform was only partially correct. While it wasn’t the absolute top performer, it still ranked as the third-best asset, showing that educational, in-depth content can still provide meaningful engagement when paired with strong lead hooks.

What stood out most was the audience’s preference for immediate problem-solving tools over purely educational content, executive-facing dashboards that help justify content investments, and scalable systems rather than one-off templates.

These insights validated our multi-variant approach and highlighted a clear path for creating future lead generation assets that deliver both value and measurable results.

      Learnings

      What Worked (And What Didn't)

Floating phone mockup with multiple emails

The content testing revealed clear audience preferences: decision-makers are most interested in ROI proof, while practitioners prioritize scalable solutions. Interactive tools and calculators consistently outperformed static templates, and positioning content as “2025-specific” boosted perceived relevance and urgency.

Interestingly, the “Fresh Ideas” angle (Pain Point 3) generated less interest, showing that audiences were more focused on solving immediate, practical problems than seeking inspiration.

Based on these insights, we recommended a 30-day follow-up plan to:

      • Double down on winning assets with increased budget allocation
      • Engage new leads through targeted nurture sequences
      • Re-engage lapsed leads with updated 2025 positioning
      • Build organic capture via strategic pop-ups offering high-value tools

      The biggest takeaway?

We built Verblio a scalable, repeatable lead generation funnel they can use in perpetuity to generate qualified leads.

Beyond a single campaign, they now have multiple assets, a clear path to consultations, and a data-driven approach that connects with their audience and lays the foundation for sustainable growth on every future content initiative.
